We would strongly promote independence from South Africa and the implementation of the UN Peace Plan, thus allowing Namibians to exercise their right to self-determination. 'We know that this commitment will not earn ourselves popularity in certain quarters,' we wrote, 'but we can see no alternative to the holding of free and fair elections.'
