|Jooste Leon - Swapo|
|Leon Jooste was the surprise replacement for Gerhard Tötemeyer, who resigned as Deputy Minister of Local and Regional Government and Housing and an MP due to ill-health in August 2004.
President Sam Nujoma had first met the businessman turned politician during hunting trips to Jooste’s Eden Nature Reserve in the Grootfontein area. Nujoma later invited the entrepreneur and conservationist to accompany him on a government trip to Brazil. Jooste’s political career continued into the 2005-2010 parliament when Nujoma nominated him as one of his ten candidates for the Swapo party list for the 2004 National Assembly (NA) election. In March 2005, President Hifikepunye Pohamba appointed him as Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, an area where he has ten years of expertise as the manager of Eden – a private sanctuary for endemic and endangered wildlife species specialising in the upper-end of the tourism and hunting markets. Jooste bought Eden from his father in 2004. Although unknown in Swapo’s ranks. Jooste was a member of the party when he was appointed in 2004.
In 2006, Jooste acted as a government contact person for Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt during their visit to the country, which attracted worldwide media coverage. Jolie gave birth to the couple’s daughter at Swakopmund in May 2006.
