|Von Hase, Raimar - Civil society|
|In 2004 Raimar von Hase was elected President of Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU), which represents about 2,000 commercial farmers. Von Hase has farmed since 1975 on Farm Jena in the Uhlenhorst area, mainly producing Swakara pelts, breeding Karakul rams, and producing lambs.
From 1984 to 1992 he was a member of the Karakul Board and the International Karakul Secretariat as well as a member of the Agra Board of Directors. He is currently a member of the management of the Uhlenhorst Farmers Assocation.
Since becoming NAU President, Von Hase has adopted a conciliatory and welcoming approach to most government initiatives on land reform – viewing the land tax as necessary to discourage large land holdings, expropriation as a matter for negotiation rather than conflict, and the resettlement programme as having potential if training is improved. He has dismissed comparisons between land reform in Namibia and the situation in Zimbabwe.
As NAU President Von Hase succeeded Jan de Wet – a figure with a similar moderate approach to the land issue but a far more politically controversial past.
