Who are we
  • Theunis Keulder has been the Executive Director of the Namibia Institute for Democracy (NID) between 1995 and 2007.  As such, he has extensive experience in the overall coordination and implementation of projects funded by a variety of donors in Namibia, such as civic education, integrity promotion, anti-corruption, organizational management skills and the administration of small grants to local civil society organizations programs. He has participated internationally in a number of conferences relating to anti-corruption, civic education, civil society development and organizational management  He holds a Masters degree in Communications (1991) and a Masters Degree in Business Leadership (2000) from the University of South Africa Business School.
  • Dr. Justine Hunter serves as the Executive Director of the NID since May 2007. Previously she worked as the Programme Manager at the NID’s Public Dialogue Centre.  She has wide experience in conducting local research and surveys on socio-political issues such as HIV/AIDS, land reform and public policy.  She is the editor of Who should own the land? Analyses and views on land reform and the land question in Namibia and Southern Africa (NID, 2004) and Spot the difference. Namibia’s political parties compared (NID, 2005). She also wrote articles on transitional justice.  She holds a PhD in Political Science, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg i.Br., Germany (2004) and a Masters in Political Science, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelm- Universität, Bonn, Germany (1998).
  • Naita Hishoono manages the Civil Society Support Programme (CSSP) at the NID.  She has wide experience in leading teams and networks of rurally based Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in conducting development projects in Namibia.   In this process, she assists such CSOs to interact with relevant authorities, addresses their training needs, and includes CSOs in national civic education, public awareness and research programmes on issues such as anti-corruption, voter education and HIV/AIDS.
  • Graham Hopwood is the Programme Manager of the Public Dialogue Centre at the NID in Windhoek. He is also a Co-editor of Insight Namibia, Namibia's only current affairs magazine. He holds a BA Hons degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Liverpool, UK (1985). Hopwood was a journalist and sub-editor at The Namibian newspaper, based in Windhoek, from 1992 to 2004. Prior to that he was the co-ordinator of Church Action on Namibia (CAN) in London, UK from 1989 to 1991. His published work includes Tackling Corruption: Opinions on the Way Forward in Namibia (Editor) published by the NID (2007); the Guide to Namibian Politics published by NID (2004 and 2006); Regional Councils: At the Crossroads (occasional paper published by NID 2005); The Swapo Extraordinary Congress: Uncharted Territory (research paper published by IPPR 2004); The Men Who Would Be President (research paper published by IPPR 2004); Walvis Bay: South Africa's Hostage (booklet published by Catholic Institute for International Relations 1991).
  • Naomi Kisting is a legal trainer currently conducting all training activities of the NID.  As such, she has extensive experience in conducting training courses for government ministries, institutions in the private sector, non-governmental organisations, traditional leaders and in schools on issues such as advocacy skills, anti-corruption and ethics.  She has conducted extensive legal training on gender issues, local legislation on rape, domestic violence, maintenance and inheritance.  
  • Callista Ngqula is a community media expert, and is currently leading a project to build a network of sustainable community radio stations in Namibia. In this process, she assists start-up community media in establishing themselves as the voices of communities through ongoing technical assistance, and works with community media in civic education programs.  She is experienced in lecturing on basic life skills with a main focus on community and corporate communication. 
  • Erika Benz is an accountant experienced in administering small grants programs to CSOs and NGOs, as part of which she assists such organisations to establish and maintain bookkeeping and administrative systems to properly account for grants.  Apart from a BComm degree, she holds a Masters in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa Business School (2003).
