Community Radio
  • The overall goal of the Community Media Project is to promote the development of community media to ensure regular and sustainable coverage of community issues.  In this process, the NID strives to ensure a conducive environment for community media to freely operate in.    MISA Namibia and the Namibia Community Radio Network are therefore assisted to engage with policy makers to ensure that community radio and television is specifically included in the new Communications Act for Namibia.

In order to address current weaknesses of community media initiatives, the NID, in cooperation with the Constituency Channel, the Namibia Community Radio Network Support (NCRN) and the University of Namibia (UNAM) are providing training and technical assistance to emerging community media in:

    •  organisational management skills
    •  technical training
    •  local content gathering
    •  audience research
    •  fundraising and marketing

Currently, four specific emerging community radio initiatives in 2007-2008 are supported.  These are:

    • Katutura Community Radio   – Windhoek, Khomas region
    • Ocean Wave Community Radio   – Swakopmund, Erongo region
    • Ohangwena Community Radio  – Eenhana, Ohangwena region
    • Karas Community Radios   -  Keetmanshoop, Karas region
